Company K
Abraham Cohn
- Captain
NOT my ancestor, but an outstanding Jewish-American soldier worthy of mention:

In August 1861, ABRAHAM COHN--a Jewish immigrant from Silesia/Prussia--enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. C of the 68th N.Y. Inf. Rgt. (which served in Gen. Louis Blenker's German-American Infantry Division); he was promoted thru the ranks to Captain of Co. K of the same regiment; and, he resigned his commission due to service-related disability on 17 Dec. 1863.

After being discharged for disability, ABRAHAM COHN relocated to Campton, New Hampshire; and, in January 1864, enlisted as a Private in the 6th N.H. Inf. Rgt.--where he was promoted to Sergeant Major in March 1864. He was described as being '5'5' tall, of florid complexion, with blue eyes, and black hair.' He served with the 6th N.H. in the Virginia Campaign of 1864: on 06 May 1864, at the Battle of the Wilderness, he displayed such 'conspicuous gallantry' in rallying the men of his and neighboring regiments that he became the first Jewish-American from New Hampshire to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Displaying similarly 'conspicuous gallantry' at the Battle of the Crater, near Petersburg, Va., on 30 July 1864--where he was wounded-in-action--he was awarded one Congressional Medal of Honor (in 1865) for TWO brave acts.

SGT. MAJ. ABRAHAM COHN was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 6th N.H. Inf. Rgt. on 08 Mar. 1865; he participated in the final campaign in the Spring of 1865; and, he was honorably discharged with his regiment in the summer of 1865.

Please see the entry under the 6th N.H. Inf. Rgt.
